Industrial Engineering and Analytics

Tuesday June 8 @ 6PM

Presenter: Dr. Robert Randall

Industrial Engineers have led the way in analytics since Frederick Taylor and the Gilbreths. The modern version of analytics can be used in traditional settings as well, so let's talk about how optimization, AI, and other advanced analytics work and have a discussion on how these tools that are often used in the service industry may be applied into the manufacturing setting. We'll also take a walk down a non-traditional IE path in consulting that is becoming appealing to many of our students.

Project Management: Is it a Science or Art?

January 12, 2021 @ NOON on Zoom

Presenter: Ashish Shah, CSI-IIE

Engineering Procurement Construction (EPC) is a unique industry that requires a high focus on project management in order to achieve total success. In fact, failure of a single project can sink an entire company. There are thousands of businesses who rely on project management, and many of them do not survive due to the lack of expertise in this area. During Ashish’s 35 years of experience in the EPC world, he was fortunate enough to work for a company in the top quartile among EPCs. Based on his deep project management experience, this presentation will define project management, and the various processes, tools, and technologies that can make a company successful if executed properly.

We will leave time at the end to "virtually" network. We look forward to "seeing" you at this meeting.

South Carolina IISE / SHS Meeting

November 11, 2020 @ 5pm on Zoom

Presenter: Kevin Taaffe, Ph.D. and Vishnu Prabhu, Clemson

Over 46 million cases of infections and about a million deaths have been reported across the world since the World Health Organization declared the novel coronavirus disease a pandemic. With hospital systems resuming their elective surgeries and going back to normal functioning places, specialty physicians as a high-risk target of the epidemic. Moreover, specialty groups, such as anesthesiologists, are among the most vulnerable groups as they are responsible for the patient's airway management and come in close contact with their nose and mouth. An agent-based simulation model was developed to test various staffing policies and interactions within the anesthesiology department of the largest healthcare provider in Upstate South Carolina. Results consistently show a reduction in the number of deaths, anesthesiologists not available to work, and the number of infected anesthesiologists when a no mixing shift policy segregates the anesthesiologists as teams and assigns them to a shift within a single hospital.

We will leave time at the end to "virtually" network. You will have the opportunity to introduce yourself. You can also share challenges or successes you have encountered during these unprecedented times
